Historical References
The Executioner's Sword was used from the 16th up to the 19th century in europe. It was never used in combat since its way too heavy to be used effectively. In the middle ages beeing executed by one was reserved for the nobility, whereas commoners got executed by a executioner's ax, a gallows or other methods. The last execution with an Executioner's Sword in europe was 1868 in Switzerland. Executioner's Swords were usually pretty decorated and had texts written on the flat of the blade.
The Katzbalger skin depicts a weapon that was actually used in combat. A Katzbalger was used during the 16th to 17th century. It was a one-handed sword, carried as a sidearm by Landsknechts. There are some depictions of two-handed variants in some historical drawings but two-handed ones were the minority. A Katzbalger can be identified by its signature "S" shaped guard.
