Historical References[ | ]

Longsword is a broad term that includes tons of different sword types.

What most of them have in common is the grip meant for two-handed use, the straight blade with a point on top, the crossguard and the length of 100 cm to 140 cm.

There were early examples dating back all the way to the 12th century, although they were pretty rare at that time, they became very popular during the 14th century as armor became better and shields weren't necessary anymore which left one hand empty. As armor progressed longswords developed into having thinner blades to get a sharper point since cutting was almost useless against armored opponents and having a sharper point helped penetrating the mail on weak spots such as the armpits, the groin, the inside of the gauntlets (which usually had no mail at all) or the inside of the ellbows.

In a battlefield situation they were only used as a backup weapon, in case your main weapon (which would usually be some kind of polearm) broke or got dropped. In towns and cities they were used as a status symbol, to display your wealth and as a basic self defence tool.

Longswords then started to dissapear as the 16th century went on, they were used in civilian fencing clubs up to the 17th century. In recent years many fencing schools appered, using 15th to 17th century fighting manuals as a source to recreate it.

Bastard swords also fall into the longsword category.
