The Lute is a unique weapon which functions as a musical instrument, the only one of its kind in the game other than the Shawm.
Overview[ | ]
The Lute is a simple stringed musical instrument. While held, the lute can be used to play a few simple musical notes: a sharp plucking note with a right click, or a softer strum with a left click. The pitch can be varied depending on the direction the player is looking. It also plays a note when you attempt to kick while holding the lute. Although its alternate mode allows the instrument to be used as a weapon, it's not a very good one, and is generally only used as such either as an absolute last resort or as a meme weapon.
Alt Mode: Grips the lute by its neck, turning it into an improvised blunt weapon.
Strengths[ | ]
- Can serve as a halfway decent weapon in a pinch, especially for its low point cost.
- Playing the lute boosts teammates' morale (not really).
Weaknesses[ | ]
- Low damage all around.
- Slow attack speed.
- Negative parry drain negation, meaning parrying with the lute drains significantly more stamina than anything else.
Skins / Components[ | ]
The Lute has 2 skins: Default and the Court Minstrel Lute. This is a much more detailed and ornamented texture for the lute. It also allows you to change the color of the wood on the lute, which is unavailable for the default skin.

Historical References[ | ]
Lutes are a family of plucked string instruments with a neck and a deep round back enclosing a hollow cavity, usually with a sound hole or opening in the body. Lutes are originated during classical antiquity and developed through the middle ages. Early lutes were common throughout ancient Rome, and the infamous emperor Nero allegedly played the lyre while Rome burned.
Notes and Trivia[ | ]
- The engineer default mercenary carries the lute as a tertiary item.
- Can be equipped by Peasants.
- One of the only weapons with a negative number on its parry drain negation.
- Despite the fact that it is held with one hand in its alt mode, Lutes cannot be used alongside shields.
- A popular usage for the Lute among the Mordhau community is in combination with a program called LuteBot; Through it, a player can easily and automatically use a lute to play a number of custom songs, with some popular choices including At Doom's Gates from the original DOOM game, or He's A Pirate from the Pirates Of The Caribbean movie series.
